How To Perform Fogging And Defogging in microbiology Lab

Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) – Chemical Fogging & Defogging | Microbial Testing Room

Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)

1. Objective

To standardize the chemical fogging and defogging process in controlled environments to ensure effective disinfection and compliance with microbial control standards.

2. Scope

This SOP applies to the following areas:

  • Microbial Limit Testing Room

3. Responsibilities

  • Microbiology Team: Perform fogging/defogging, maintain records.

4. Materials & Equipment

  • Fogging Machine: Wet Fogger
  • Disinfectant: 2% W/V Care P-AS Solution
  • PPE: Gloves, goggles, mask, shoe covers, protective gown

5. Procedure

5.1 Pre-Fogging Preparations

  1. Notify relevant departments before starting.
  2. Prepare disinfectant solution as per table:
Total Volume (mL) Care P-AS (mL) Purified Water (mL)
1000 20 980
2000 40 1960
  1. Fill the fogger tank and ensure proper assembly.
  2. Display warning signs at entry points.

5.2 Fogging Execution

  1. Set fogging parameters per room:
Room Disinfectant (mL) Time (min)
MLT room 30 2
Change room 60 4
  1. Adjust fogger nozzle and flow rate (0–9 scale).
  2. Start fogging using the digital timer (DG 60).
  3. After completion, leave the room closed for 60 minutes.

5.3 Defogging Process

  1. Activate AHU (heater OFF) for 30 minutes.
  2. Open all doors (except Change Room-I).
  3. Ensure no personnel remain in the area.

5.4 Post-Fogging Activities

  1. Clean the fogger with purified water.
  2. Document details in Annexure-01.

6. Safety Precautions

  • Mandatory PPE: Gloves, goggles, mask, shoe covers.
  • Strictly prohibit entry during fogging/defogging.
  • Emergency: Rinse eyes/skin with water if exposed; seek medical help.
